Up

I've been riding Con a bit.  He had his first trail ride.  He's very cautious, and I don't think he's ever been on trail before.  However, he is a perfect gentleman - he picks his feet up beautifully when he knows an obstacle is there, and listens to the rein (and maybe a tiny bit to the leg) and doesn't run me into trees.  He tries to go the way he was taught, with his head up and nose out.  By halfway through that ride, he had relaxed a bit and was starting to put his head down, at least when he got to an obstacle.

More than anything, Con is a good sport.  He puts up with just about anything, and doesn't get scared.  I am so impressed with him.

He is having an interesting time transitioning; he always seems to be finding ways to hurt himself around the pasture, either overdoing things or scratching himself.  Yesterday when I took these pictures he had a stocked-up hind leg (we couldn't find any injury, he probably just - overdid it...).  So the big blue thing in the pictures is my first poultice job, with a little help from Marge.  The yellow stuff on his head is furazolidone for the scratches he got the other day, probably itching his head on something.  Well, he has learned to poop outside his stall - hopefully he will learn how to not hurt himself.

Con has turned his charm on with Pete, seen holding and leading him in a couple of pictures.  Did I mention he's a smart horse?  <grin>

Unfortunately, the light was fading and my digital camera didn't do so well, so these are sort of grainy.

Oh, yes - his winter coat came in black!  I always wanted a black horse - I think he is gorgeous, I'm sorry these pics don't do him justice.  I don't think he has ever had a winter coat before - probably was always clipped and blanketed.  Marge has to blanket him on cold nights, or he is shivering in the morning.  One more thing for him to adjust to.

mmm, head scritches.

How do I do this?

 Standing nicely for Pete

We've been feeding him up - he's put some belly on, but his ribs still show.
